Federal authorities arrested a 17-year-old resident of McKinney on October 5 for an alleged plot to assassinate Texas Republican Representative Keith Self. The arrest marks the latest development in a case that has drawn attention to security concerns surrounding the congressman as he campaigns for a third term in Congress.

According to campaign officials, the FBI detained the teen after determining the individual had been radicalized and was under federal surveillance. Investigators told the congressman's team that the suspect was planning a terrorist attack in the name of the Islamic State. The specific target for the planned strike was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans that was scheduled for October 17.

The event was expected to draw significant attention, including former players from the Dallas Cowboys and other high-profile guests. The congressman’s team learned of the October 5 arrest on October 6 through the U.S. Capitol Police. Officials stated that the seriousness of the threat prompted an immediate review of the congressman's security protocols.

Rep. Self, who is seeking re-election from Texas' third congressional district, said his team became more vigilant following the news. He noted that while he already maintained a strong security presence, the group increased its situational awareness. The congressman said his background in military service helped him remain composed during the crisis.

Self explained that his previous deployments to combat zones allowed him to view the threat with a level of calm that might elude other politicians. He said he focused on determining whether the suspect was acting alone or part of a larger group. He described the experience as serious but manageable given his history.

The congressman’s wife, who has been a military spouse for 25 years, also took the threat seriously. Self noted that she had sent him to combat zones multiple times and understood the inherent risks of public office. He added that while he had received threats before, this was the first instance where the situation escalated to a federal arrest.

Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the October 17 fundraiser as planned. He said he judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans at the event. He reported that the gathering proceeded without incident and that he enjoyed the time with attendees.

Since the arrest, the congressman has continued his campaign activities, including morning poll-greeting sessions. He stated that the threat would not stop him from informing voters about what he describes as a concerning political ideology. He emphasized that his team continues to monitor their surroundings while maintaining their schedule.

The case has gained traction as Self has taken a prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding resolution denouncing the practice and asserting the supremacy of the U.S. Constitution. The topic is particularly relevant in McKinney, where the city council recently approved a site plan for a mosque expansion following a contentious public process.

The teen's identity has not been made public as the investigation continues. Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the upcoming midterm election, condemned the alleged plot in a social media post. The FBI Dallas office was contacted for further comment but had not responded as of the latest update.
