Tesla FSD Delay: The New Reality for Owners

Tesla has pushed its driverless car promise to mid-2027, but the feature will only work within specific robotaxi service areas.

Tesla has officially set a new date for unsupervised Full Self-Driving in customer-owned vehicles: the second quarter of 2027. This announcement came during the company’s Q3 2026 earnings call. It marks the latest shift in a timeline that has been moving for nearly a decade. However, the scope of this update is significantly narrower than previous promises suggested.

During the call, AI chief Ashok Elluswamy clarified what this update actually entails. He explained that owners will not be getting a car that drives them anywhere they want. Instead, owners will be adding their personal vehicles to Tesla’s managed Robotaxi fleet. This means the car will only drive itself unsupervised within the specific zones where Tesla’s robotaxi service already operates.

The geographic limitations are substantial. Tesla’s robotaxi service currently runs in only six US metropolitan areas. In most of these cities, the service areas cover small, specific slices of the map. For example, the Miami zone primarily covers West Miami and a strip toward Doral and Sweetwater. Orlando and Tampa launched in July with similarly small geofences. Inside these areas, the cars stick to low-speed routes and generally avoid highways and complex urban sections.

California presents a unique challenge for this rollout. In the Bay Area, the service is not yet unsupervised. State regulations require a safety driver in every car because Tesla has not yet released the necessary data to the California DMV. This data release is required for systems beyond level 2 autonomy. Consequently, even if the software is ready, regulatory hurdles may keep safety drivers in place for California owners for the time being.

The current scale of Tesla’s robotaxi operations remains modest. The company reported reaching nearly two million cumulative unsupervised miles by the end of Q3. This milestone was achieved just one month after the Cybercab joined the Austin fleet. Third-party tracking from this spring indicated that only dozens of fully driverless Teslas were on the road. This is far from the hundreds of thousands Musk has previously discussed. Competitor Waymo was already operating in Orlando and Tampa before Tesla entered those markets and has logged over three million miles.

This new definition contrasts sharply with the original sales pitch. For years, Tesla sold FSD as a software update that would eventually allow a car to drive itself anywhere. In July 2025, Elon Musk told investors that unsupervised FSD would be available for personal use by the end of that year in certain geographies. A year prior, he expressed surprise if Tesla did not have unsupervised self-driving the following year. Many owners with the older HW3 hardware have already been told their cars cannot run unsupervised FSD at all, with no clear upgrade path provided.

The outlook remains cautious. Elluswamy reiterated that safety is the primary bottleneck. He guessed that these safety issues will be resolved by next year, but admitted uncertainty. For buyers, the goal has shifted from a car that drives you anywhere to a car that can work as a robotaxi within a controlled, small geofence. This excludes highway road trips, airport runs across town, or unsupervised commutes unless the driver lives and works inside one of the designated zones. Tesla is essentially letting owners join its fleet on its own terms, within its own limited boundaries.
