18-point GOP redraw erased: Texas 15th polls show 5-point Democratic lead

New surveys indicate a shift in the Rio Grande Valley, where Hispanic support for the Republican Party has waned despite a map redrawn to favor GOP candidates.

In the Rio Grande Valley, the political alignment of Hispanic voters is moving away from the Republican Party. Recent surveys conducted since late summer show that a majority of Hispanic voters in Texas now disapprove of President Donald Trump. The same data indicates that these voters favor Democratic candidates over Republicans by a wide margin.

The shift is most visible in the state’s 15th congressional district. In 2025, state legislators redrew the district’s boundaries to give Republicans an estimated 18-point advantage. Current polling contradicts that design. It places the Democratic candidate ahead by five to six points. This discrepancy suggests that local voter sentiment has overridden the structural advantage built into the new map.

Father Roy Snipes, a priest at La Lomita Catholic Chapel, addressed a congregation of about 30 people on October 18. The chapel stands 200 yards from the Rio Grande. Snipes, who has served the area for nearly 50 years, criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions. "There's no good excuse to detain, incarcerate and deport poor, good folks who are our neighbours," he said. Government data obtained by the Deportation Data Project shows Texas accounted for roughly one-third of all ICE arrests nationwide in July 2026.

Local business owners reflect this change in sentiment. Mario Guerrero, a Mexican-American businessman and leader of the South Texas Builders Association, voted for Trump three times. He plans to vote for a Democrat in the November 3 election. Guerrero noted that his crew of 35 daily workers has shrunk, with only four to six showing up for shifts. He stated that voters were not told how far the administration would go with its border enforcement.

Javier Villalobos, the Republican mayor of McAllen, expects a tough race. He credited the administration with securing the border but acknowledged that deporting productive, law-abiding citizens creates friction. "Most people accept deporting criminals, he said, but deporting productive, law-abiding people is where the problem begins." Republican consultant Mike Madrid observed that Latino voters are more likely to identify as independents than any other demographic group.

Democratic candidate Bobby Pulido, a Tejano singer and two-time Latin Grammy winner, has focused his campaign on the local economy. He has avoided aligning his message with the national Democratic brand. "This isn't New York, this isn't LA," Pulido said. At a local avocado festival, residents Dave Baldwin and Veronica Salazar cited rising prices as a primary concern. Baldwin said, "He is in control of our destiny with all that, and right now he's not doing a very good job."

Republican campaigners admit they face challenges in this district. Alexis Uscanga, a student volunteer, described the midterm election as a game of turnout. Tano Tijerina, the Republican candidate in the neighboring 28th district, acknowledged that national political headwinds are real. He credited Trump with breaking through barriers but conceded the difficulty of the current political environment.

If the polling holds, a modest swing back to Democrats could reshape races across the state. It could be enough to put a US Senate seat in play, a position Democrats have not won in more than 30 years.
