Tesla Q3 2026: $28.05 Billion Revenue and $0.48 Earnings Beat Expectations

Tesla met revenue forecasts and exceeded profit estimates for the third quarter, though operating income still declined significantly due to rising technology spending.

Tesla released its financial results for the third quarter of 2026 after the market closed on Tuesday, confirming a period of stable top-line growth but continued pressure on the bottom line. The company reported total revenue of $28.05 billion, a figure that remained flat compared to the same period last year and aligned closely with Wall Street projections of $28.06 billion.

Profitability showed signs of recovery, with non-GAAP earnings per share reaching $0.48. This result surpassed the $0.45 consensus estimate, although it represented a 4% decrease from the $0.50 reported a year earlier. While the margin rebounded from the previous quarter, operating income still fell by 56% to $718 million, resulting in an operating margin of 2.6%. This decline was driven by substantial increases in spending for artificial intelligence and robotics projects, which outpaced the growth in gross profit.

Automotive margins excluding regulatory credits improved to 18.1%, up from 16.3% in the second quarter. The company attributed this improvement to a better product mix and higher subscription revenue for Full Self-Driving, which partially offset lower average selling prices. However, the contribution from regulatory credits dropped sharply to $113 million, down 73% from the previous year, as federal fuel-economy penalties for other automakers continued to disappear.

The energy segment faced challenges, with revenue falling 16% to $2.88 billion despite a 10% increase in battery deployments to 13.7 GWh. Tesla cited tariff-related refunds to customers as a primary reason for the revenue dip, even as the segment's gross margin improved to 33%. In contrast, the services and other category became a bright spot, generating $4.61 billion in revenue and achieving a record gross profit of $734 million driven by charging, insurance, and parts sales.

Management attributed the flat vehicle sales volume primarily to battery availability rather than weak consumer demand. The company stated that battery supply remained the limiting factor for production, leading to a large backlog of passenger vehicles. Despite this supply constraint, Tesla delivered 486,532 cars in the quarter, a 2.1% year-over-year decline. The company also noted that active FSD subscriptions reached 1.74 million, an increase of 67% from the prior year.

Capital spending for the quarter hit $4.73 billion, more than double the amount spent in the same period last year. This heavy investment pace brings the total capex for the first nine months of 2026 to $13.01 billion, which is roughly half of the company's annual guidance of over $25 billion. To meet that target, Tesla would need to spend approximately $12 billion in the final quarter alone. Free cash flow remained positive at $1.53 billion, aided by lower spending compared to the previous quarter, and the company ended the period with $45.4 billion in cash and investments.

On the technology front, the Robotaxi service accumulated nearly 2 million unsupervised miles by the end of the quarter. This milestone came one month after the Cybercab vehicle was added to the Austin fleet. Tesla’s full shareholder letter and presentation deck are available on the company’s investor relations website, providing further details on the financial performance and strategic outlook for the remainder of the year.
