A 36-year-old British woman died Tuesday after a strong current separated her from her two sons during a family snorkel trip in the Bahamas.
The Royal Bahamas police force opened an investigation into the death. According to the force, the woman was snorkeling near the southern point of North Bimini with her husband and their two sons. A strong current swept both boys away. While attempting to reach them, the woman was also carried by the water. The children were later rescued.
Police stated that officers at the Alice Town station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. reporting an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini ferry dock. Officers arrived to find that the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical attention. A doctor at the facility pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts. The woman had been pulled from the water and brought to the ferry dock, where CPR was administered.
In a preliminary account shared on social media, the force said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." The office added that officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
Bimini is a small island group situated between Andros and Miami. It is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The islands are known for their connection to Ernest Hemingway and for hosting a shark research center.
