A 36-year-old woman from England died in the Bahamas on Tuesday.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the sudden death of the Stapleford resident on the island of Bimini.
Police reported that a strong current swept the woman's two sons away while the family snorkelled near the southern point of the island.
The mother was carried off while attempting to reach her children. Both boys were eventually rescued from the water.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10am that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock.
Police found that the woman had already been transported to the local clinic for medical attention.
A local doctor pronounced her dead at the facility despite resuscitation efforts. The force stated that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water.
Police indicated that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and supporting the family.
