Drone Warfare Resumes as Starlink Linkage Returns to Ukrainian Fronts

A week-long blackout affecting high-speed military equipment has ended, clearing the path for renewed air strikes while peace talks loom in November.

Ukrainian military drone operations have fully resumed after satellite communications were restored this weekend. The return of service ends a critical disruption that lasted more than a week. This gap had significantly hampered the ability to coordinate attacks against Russian positions.

Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara announced the fix on Saturday. He confirmed that connections are now stable on equipment moving at speeds over 400 kilometres per hour. The minister credited productive talks with Washington and the diplomatic efforts of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the resolution. The stability of these links is vital for the high-speed drone missions that form a core part of the current defensive strategy.

The outage has deepened existing friction between Kyiv and Washington. Tensions were already rising due to the US agreement to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump suggested that a new Ukrainian leader should handle negotiations. This followed a public confrontation between the two leaders at the White House in February 2025. It remains unclear who initially ordered the restrictions on the satellite access.

The restoration of service coincides with efforts to restart peace negotiations. Representatives from the United States, Ukraine, and Russia are expected to meet in Abu Dhabi in the first half of November. These talks will mark more than four years since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the schedule on Friday, while Zelenskyy agreed to technical-level meetings.

Despite the communication breakthrough, fighting continues on the ground. A missile strike on Lozova in the Kharkiv region killed one man and wounded two others on Saturday. In Chernihiv, an attack on Friday resulted in one death and at least 25 injuries. In the Donbas, shelling in Kramatorsk killed one person and wounded six, including three children. In Sloviansk, a 62-year-old woman was killed and four others were injured.

Ukrainian forces also reported successful strikes inside Russia. Targets included a petrochemical plant in Togliatti and an electronics facility in Oryol that produces missile components. The Oryol attack reportedly killed three people, according to regional authorities. Power cuts were reported in Russian-occupied Crimea following overnight strikes. Russian air defences claimed to have intercepted a SCALP cruise missile, four Neptune missiles, and 1,297 fixed-wing drones over the last 24 hours.

A local ceasefire in the Oleshky area of Kherson region was also announced. Trump credited his wife, Melania Trump, with securing the arrangement. Ukrainian and Russian officials stated the ceasefire would begin on October 27. A humanitarian operation is scheduled for October 29. The immediate restoration of satellite links provides Ukraine with the necessary tools to maintain pressure while diplomatic channels reopen.
