The independent MP, who lost both legs in the incident, is now listed as serious but stable at Alfred Hospital.

Australian politician Helen Haines moved out of critical condition on Saturday. The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne reported the change in status five days after she was struck by a vehicle in Wangaratta. This marks the first improvement in her condition since she was airlifted to the city on Monday.

Haines, 65, serves as an independent member of parliament. Authorities state she was deliberately hit outside her local office in north-east Victoria. The impact resulted in the amputation of both her legs. Her husband, Phil Haines, described the event as a horrendous incident. He noted on Wednesday that while her physical injuries are severe, her mental and cardiac health remain strong.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the crash. Police allege he drove a Toyota LandCruiser into Haines. He has appeared in court facing three charges. These include dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. His lawyer cited mental health concerns for his client but provided few specific details.

Victoria Police, supported by the Australian Federal Police, continue their investigation. Officials have not yet established a motive. Investigators are currently examining whether drug use or medication played a role in the incident. Nugent's family stated they had been long-time friends of Haines. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently commented that Australia has seen a rise in political temperature and too much shouting.

Haines has represented her electorate since 2019. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse and midwife. She is known in parliament for advocating for stronger climate action.
