Aston Villa manager Unai Emery guided his team to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, halting the leaders' unbeaten start to the season. The result at Villa Park allowed Arsenal to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table after their own match in north London.
Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, breaking the deadlock in the sixth minute and securing the win in the 60th. Manchester City, who had remained unbeaten in their first eight league games, now sit level with Arsenal on 21 points. City are also navigating an off-field financial dispute, having appealed a commission's finding that they committed 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules.
Arsenal took advantage of the City loss by defeating Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in heavy rain. The Gunners opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Ezri Konsa bundled in a rebound from a Martin Odegaard corner. This marked Arsenal's first set-piece goal since May, ending a 13-game drought in all competitions without a dead ball strike.
The second goal came in the 68th minute, a product of two milestone appearances. Ben White, playing his 200th game for the club, delivered a cross that Gabriel headed in on his 200th Premier League appearance. The win moved Arsenal past their opponents on goal difference, though Everton remains in ninth place.
Context for the weekend's upsets includes Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Mathys Tel scored the final goal in the 87th minute, while Cole Palmer received a second yellow card in the 80th. It was Spurs' second league victory at that venue in 36 years, lifting them to 12th in the table. Fulham also secured a 1-0 win over Coventry City, with Oscar Bobb scoring in the 80th minute to keep Fulham in 13th place.
