Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks will guide the team into Sunday's Bundesliga match against Freiburg. He takes charge as head coach Vincent Kompany remains in hospital, where he is receiving treatment for a virus. The club announced on Saturday that Kompany, 40, is in stable condition following a collapse on the training pitch the previous day.
Director of Sport Max Eberl stated that medical examinations are still ongoing to determine the exact nature of the illness. The club has not set a specific recovery timeframe. Eberl said the priority is to understand the problem before discussing a return. He clarified that the absence is expected to last weeks rather than days.
Danks, who is English, led the Saturday press conference in Kompany's place. He reported speaking briefly with the former Manchester City and Belgium captain on Friday. Danks said the conversation focused on health rather than tactics. He noted that the coaching staff now controls all football operations and will work as a unit to move the club forward.
The club postponed a second-team match on Friday after the incident. Eberl said the management did not seek a delay for the Bundesliga fixture at Freiburg. He argued that a strong performance and a win would be the best way to support Kompany's recovery. Bayern holds a one-point lead over Freiburg at the top of the table heading into the game.
Danks also confirmed that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will miss the match. Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal despite the virus. He later admitted he ignored warning signs from his body. Bayern's next Champions League match is scheduled for November 3 in Madrid against Atletico.
