Badgers Maintain Unblemished Record With Dominant Doubleheader Victory

The women's tennis squad improved to 6-0 by defeating Bradley and Green Bay in straight sets, marking their best start since 1992.

Wisconsin women's tennis has entered the new season with a perfect 6-0 record, a milestone that positions the program among the most consistent in its history. The Badgers achieved this standing on Saturday by completing a doubleheader with two identical 7-0 shutouts. They first dispatched Bradley before moving on to Green Bay, a result that gives the team its strongest opening stretch since 1992.

The path to these victories was marked by an early and decisive advantage in the doubles events, which set the tone for the remainder of the matches. In the first doubles pairing, freshman MaryAnn Rompf and senior Kelsey Grambeau defeated Theresa Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski with a score of 6-1. The Badgers maintained this momentum in the second doubles match, where sophomore Melissa Pick and freshman Lexi Keberle overcame Maria Neff and Samm Pedersen, 6-0. This early lead allowed the Wisconsin singles players to enter the court without the pressure of trailing opponents.

The singles competition proved to be a display of total control, as not a single Badger dropped a set across the entire doubleheader. Lexi Keberle, competing at first singles, secured a straightforward 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tebon. This win extends her personal perfect record in both singles and doubles, bringing her combined season tally to 7-0. The consistency at the top of the lineup was mirrored lower down the card, ensuring that Wisconsin never faced a challenging situation in any individual matchup.

Rompf contributed to the sweep at second singles, taking her match against Piaskowski, 6-3, 6-1. At third singles, Michelle Linden defeated Sterre Tijssens, 6-1, 6-0. Melissa Pick completed her day by shutting out Neff, 6-0, 6-0. Christina Zordani rounded out the scoring at fifth singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pedersen, improving her personal singles record to 5-0 on the season.

Head coach Kelcy McKenna attributed the team's flawless performance to the players' focus on elements within their direct control. She highlighted attitude, effort, and energy as the primary drivers of the result. McKenna noted that these three factors are critical to the program's success and that the team executed them effectively during the matches.

Despite the perfect record, McKenna emphasized the need for continued attention to detail in preparation for the upcoming months. She stated that the team must concentrate on executing the small tasks correctly in practice. This includes managing the specifics of daily drills and match simulations to ensure the squad is fully ready for the National Indoors and the remainder of the spring season.

The coach identified specific areas for improvement, particularly within the doubles unit. She expressed a desire for the team to clean up their serve and return games. McKenna stressed the importance of being the first team to apply aggression and of hitting intended targets during service plays to maintain a competitive edge.

She also addressed the transition from doubles to singles, noting the need to protect the advantage gained in the paired events. McKenna urged the players to carry momentum forward and to play with grit, avoiding the giveaway of free points to opponents once the singles matches begin.

The Badgers will have an early opportunity to test their consistency when they host the National Team Indoor Championship. The event is scheduled for Feb. 9-12. The team will aim to extend its unbeaten streak during this tournament, building on the foundation laid by this weekend's doubleheader victories.
