Shin Bet Directs Security for Gadi Eisenkot

Israel's domestic security agency will now oversee protective measures for the Yashar party chairman after a recent review of threat intelligence.

By William Parker ·

The Shin Bet, Israel's primary domestic security agency, will assume direct control over the security arrangements for Gadi Eisenkot, the chairman of the Yashar party, beginning this Sunday. This decision marks the culmination of a months long process to determine the level of state protection required for political figures who do not hold official government positions. The party confirmed that a private security firm will physically guard Eisenkot starting Sunday morning. However, this private team will operate under the specific and direct instructions of Unit 730, the elite division of the Shin Bet responsible for personal security.

The path to this arrangement was not immediate. In August, David Zini, the chief of the Shin Bet, initially concluded that Eisenkot did not meet the established criteria for protection by Unit 730. That assessment shifted in September after the Advisory Committee for Personal Security reviewed updated intelligence and threat evaluations. The committee subsequently recommended that the Shin Bet take a more active supervisory role. Despite Zini's approval, the Yashar party noted in September that no security detail had yet been formally assigned to Eisenkot, creating a period of administrative delay between the decision and its implementation.

The Shin Bet has outlined a broader framework of measures for party leaders that includes several key components. Intelligence units will provide an oversight and support structure. Security teams hired by party leaders will be granted permission to carry weapons. There will be formal coordination channels established between the Shin Bet and these private security teams. Additionally, periodic situation assessments will be conducted to gauge the specific threat level facing each leader. These measures are designed to standardize the protection of political figures who fall outside the traditional scope of state security.

The authority for these arrangements rests with the Ministerial Committee for Shin Bet Affairs. The committee granted Zini the power to set security protocols for party leaders who hold no public office and are not otherwise entitled to standard state protection. This specific authorization remains in force until the next Knesset is sworn in, providing a temporary but definitive legal basis for the current security posture.

Not all requests for similar protection have been granted. Yair Golan, the chairman of The Democrats, has also petitioned for Shin Bet protection. Golan cited a threat level comparable to that of Eisenkot. However, the Shin Bet has denied him immediate protection at this stage. This distinction highlights the selective nature of the agency's current approach to safeguarding political opposition leaders who are not currently serving in the government.

The situation underscores the evolving security landscape for Israeli political figures. As threats to party leaders intensify, the reliance on private security firms operating under state guidance has become a practical solution. The shift for Eisenkot signals that the Shin Bet is moving from a passive advisory role to a more active operational oversight capacity for key political actors. This development may set a precedent for how other party leaders seek and receive security support in the coming months.
